Milestones, field activity and regional engagement

Follow the Centre’s programme progress, institutional milestones and contribution to regional clean-air collaboration.

KNUST establishes the West Africa Centre for Clean Air

The Centre’s initial two-year programme connects air-quality regulation, monitoring, open data and regional capacity.

Hosted at the College of Engineering, WACCA is intended to strengthen the evidence and institutional capability needed for cleaner air in Ghana and across West Africa. The programme includes work on regulatory frameworks, deployment and calibration of low-cost sensors, an accessible data platform, regional consultation and training.

The Centre is supported by the UNEP Climate & Clean Air Coalition under project reference GH-25-008. Future updates will report programme targets and confirmed achievements separately.

WACCA participates in the Africa Clean Air Forum 2026

WACCA representatives joined clean-air institutions and practitioners in Pretoria for discussions on science, policy, investment and regional coordination.

The Forum engagement contributed to WACCA’s wider programme of partnership development, technical learning and regional cooperation in monitoring, data and regulatory guidance.

Prof. Francis Kemausuor and Dr. Yen Adams Sokama-Neuyam represented WACCA in discussions relevant to the Centre’s programme.

Purpose of the engagement

Regional implementation benefits from shared learning, comparable evidence and cooperation among research institutions, regulators, cities and financing partners. WACCA’s participation supported these connections for its initial programme.
